Converging Paths: Design in Creative Economy

4-6 September 2025
organized by
Ankara Bilim University

Since the Renaissance, the commercial aspects of creative disciplines have evolved significantly, and this evolution has served as a model for design disciplines to turn their original ideas into marketable products. Important players who actively shaped and controlled this dynamic field included art dealers, critics, galleries, agencies, and other organizations. Collectively, their joint ventures not only guided the course of artistic expression but also established the foundation for the complex network of connections that has developed into the complex environment that we now identify as the creative industry.

Ankara

The interaction of creative disciplines has long been woven into the fabric of history, even if the phrase "creative industry" was first formalized in the 1990s. Artisan intellectual groups collaborated on projects that went beyond the confines of particular artistic disciplines throughout various historical periods. Furthermore, the historical context highlights the crucial role that regulatory bodies, artist unions, and syndicates had in establishing networks of communication and legal frameworks that promoted the development of creative interactions.

This conference will provide a comprehensive exploration into the intricate dynamics between design and creative industry, shedding light on diverse actors, institutions, and legislative frameworks that have contributed to its evolution. Our aim is to unravel the influences that have paved the way for the emergence of today's vibrant creative economy, examining both the interplay of business and economic factors, and the exchange of design metaphors that have transitioned from art to design and ultimately into marketable commodities.

Potential papers for submission, while not limited to, may include:

Historical Evolution of Design Markets: Tracing the development of design markets, exploring the roles of dealers, galleries, design museums and agents helped shaping the business side of creative disciplines.

Plans for hybrid conference and institutional support

The efficiency and power of in-person events cannot be disputed but hybrid plannings are also beneficial solutions when some of the attendees cannot or does not want to travel to the host country, or the attendees have limited resources to spend and cannot make it to the event. An-other reason behind considering hybrid sessions is to offer virtual attendance options as a way to attract a broader number of registrants and thus lower the costs and increase the overall in-come.

Ankara Bilim University will provide support for the use of school’s all available facilities, services and equipment, technical infrastructure and technical staff to support the organisation, use of access networks, conference halls and laboratories, preparation of the conference web-site, sponsorship agreements and financial contribution. The Board of Trustees has also agreed to make a budget of not exceeding €2000 available for conveners to use in cases of ur-gency.
